Director and Head Guide
The Director and Head Guide of Andeanface, Javier, has been climbing in Ecuador for more than 25 years and has been organising expeditions for 15 years. As a mountaineer he has led many ascents in the Andes, the Alps, the Karakorum and the Himalayas. The eight expeditions he headed in Nepal include guiding on two eight thousand meter peaks. Javier was one of the Instructors of the Ecuadorian Association of Mountain guides (ASEGUIM), and has completed several courses with ENSA, the French National School of Guides. On voluntary basis he is actually the coordinator of the rescue team of the association of guides ASEGUIM During his cycling career he won seven times the National Road Racing Championship, and also a gold and silver medal in the Pan-American games of 1990, for which he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honour for the highest merit in sports.

Helma (co-owner of the company) is President of Andeanface. She was born in Holland and worked for a few years in London as a stockbroker. She decided to leave her job in order to achieve her dream of accompanying children in need. She left for Nepal to work as a volunteer in a children's hospital where she personally felt the reality of poor kids’ lives in a third world country. She then started the Daniëlle Children's Fund ( a non profit organization) to create better opportunities for children in need of Nepal. Later she also began a project in Ecuador, her husband's country of birth, and the place where they both actually live.

Our team consists of experienced and qualified bilingual guides who have great knowledge of the mountains and areas you visit. They all are friendly, cheerful people that will make sure that everything runs smoothly and that you have a great experience.
Our guides enjoy sharing their love for our country and always show their respect towards our mountains, culture and people.
Most of our guides hold the IFMGA guide licence and have a WFR wilderness medicine certificate.
Jaime Ávila
Jaime Ávila
Jaime has successfully guided expeditions in every country of the Andes for international mountain guiding organizations. These included ascents of Aconcagua through the polish glacier route, several expeditions in Bolivia, 11 successful ascents of Alpamayo and Huascaran in Peru and several other less known peaks in the Andes, as well as many expeditions in Ecuador. In 2003 he was the assistant leader of a commercial expedition to Denali in Alaska and after that he managed to develop his professional career further afield out of the Americas. In 2004 he led a successful expedition to Ama dablam and to Island Peak located in the heart of the Himalayas, in 2011 he reached the summit of Manaslu as guide of an international expedition, and in 2014 he worked as a guide on Everest.
Benno Schlauri
Benno Schlauri
Benno is a Swiss guide living in Ecuador since 1995 and is happily married to Mariana, an Ecuadorian national. Benno started skiing at the early age of 4; at 14 he was a member of the Swiss Alpine Club where he had an extensive climbing career in the Alps. He is one of the few ASEGUIM guides who are qualified to lead ski descents in Ecuador. Since his arrival he has continuously been guiding in most of the Andean countries of South America, especially in Ecuador. At the moment he is one of the Instructors of the Ecuadorian Association of Mountain Guides and he is a internationally certified (IFMGA) guide.
Gaspar Navarrete
Gaspar Navarrete
Gaspar is one of the most technically skilled guides of Ecuador. Besides climbing in Ecuador he has guided commercial trips to the highest peaks of other Andean countries such as in Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina and climbed many interesting routes in the European Alps including the North Face of the Eiger. Gaspar has also guided in Elbrus. He has attended several training courses with the French School of guides ENSA from Chamonix. His enthusiasm for new routes in the mountains of Ecuador is contagious and he enjoys sharing it with others who have a similar love of wild, remote places. In April 2011 Gaspar led an American expedition to Island Peak (6.085 m) in the Himalaya. During low season he works as a horse back riding guide in the Andes. His passion for nature brought him to become an enthusiastic environmental activist. He is a internationally certified (IFMGA) guide.

He started to climb when he was eleven years old in Middle School, and became part of “San Gabriel mountain climbing club”. There, Ramiro discovered majestic places and solidarity as pure as brotherhood. For him, the “mountain” was an encounter with a social and natural environment, and also with himself. In 2006 he became a professional mountain guide when he joined the Ecuadorian Association of Mountain Guides, Aseguim, in Ecuador. In 2018 he obtained the international guiding certificate from the IFMGA. He also holds an updated WFR (Wilderness First Responder) certification. He loves guiding, it is a job that has given him a wider view of the culture, nature and diversity of each country through outdoor activities and he also combines it with photography and journalism, that are also his passions. Marco Castillo
Marco Castillo
Marco is a keen runner and a qualified mountain guide. He has worked for the red cross of Ecuador as part of their rescue team. During the last 15 years he has guided more than 300 ascents of Cotopaxi and no less than 60 of Chimborazo. Happily married to Cecilia he is busy raising two children when he is not climbing. Marco is an ASEGUIM member. Marco led, in August 2011, the first ascent of Cotopaxi from the sea to 5.897 m in 5 days!. In 2017 he became a internationally certified (IFMGA) guide.
David Trujillo

David Trujillo, is a member of ASEGUIM has been guiding mountaineering expeditions for several years. His passion has not only driven him to climb the highest mountains in Ecuador, but has motivated his numerous guiding expeditions to Peru and Bolivia. A world traveler, David has also climbed several peaks in Europe and has ice climbed in Colorado. His numerous passions include mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing and back-country skiing. "When David is guiding expeditions, he isn't in the mountains," explains a client. "But the mountains are in him." He is a internationally certified mountain guide (IFMGA).

Joaquin Andino is a ASEGUIM mountain and trekking guide, has studied Economics and also has completed university studies in Tourism, Joaquin has completed training courses with the Peruvian Association of Guides, has climbed the highest peaks of Peru, Bolivia and Colombia. Joaquin loves photography and natural history he is also a keen Cyclist. As a guide he is very knowledgeable in natural history.

Pablo’s love and respect for his country are conveyed with great enthusiasm. His knowledge of Ecuadorian culture and history is prodigious; combined with his love of the outdoors, it makes him a great leader for this diverse and fascinating country. Pablo is well versed in the rich culture of Ecuador as well as the classic trekking routes. His knowledge of the country, its people, and traditions will add immensely to your appreciation of the trip, and he has a gift for instilling confidence in every trekker. Pablo lived, studied and worked in the United States for 4 years. His ability to cross cultural boundaries and forge relationships with people from all over the world is his trademark. In 2012, Pablo cycled from sea level to the hut of Cotopaxi 4.800m and reached the summit 5.897m, it took him 5 days! Also he led the first “sea to summit” ascent of Chimborazo, this adventure stated at sea level and ended on top of Chimborazo 6.310m.

Fabián Freire
Fabian has explored and established new hiking routes in the Ecuadorian central Andes and cloud forests as a naturalist guide. He visited remote and isolated native communities, settlements, villages and highland remote Indian markets. Fabian has also guided in the Ecuadorian upper Amazon basin coming across Huao, Shuar, Secoya, Siona, Cofàn and Quichua tribes and territories. During the last 10 years he has carried out many acclimatization programs for mountaineers wanting to climb the major peaks of Ecuador. For a few years Fabian was working in Canada as the Director of Food and Beverage of Maitre d’hôtel. Fabian is a fluent English speaker and has a medium level of French.

Romel has been involved most of his life in outdoor sports in Ecuador, twenty years working as a guide and several outdoor races on his belt. He is a passionate photographer. A certified ASEGUIM guide and in addition he holds a degree as Environmental Engineer. His extensive climbing background includes all of the mountains of Ecuador with some unusual routes, and several 6.000 m peaks in the rest of South America His love for the Ecuadorian mountains and people, and his knowledge of the culture of Ecuador make him a great trip leader. He is a internationally certified mountain guide ( IFMGA).
Abraham Chuquirmaca

Native from the Antisana region, Abraham grew up in the mountain village of El Tambo in the Northern side of Antisana mountain, often watching climbers going to the base camp of this massive volcano, later he learnt mountaineering techniques with his friends and started following several amateur mountaineering courses. In 2003 Abraham became a fully qualified mountain guide after completing his training with ASEGUIM. He is a fluent english speaker. He has led several expeditions in the southern Andes including Aconcagua. He is a experienced member of the ecuadorian mountain rescue team. He is a internationally certified mountain guide ( IFMGA).

Franklin is member of ASEGUIM since 2005 and director of the guide rescue team GRA (Grupo de Rescate ASEGUIM) since 2015. He counts with comprehensive experience in the Ecuadorian and the rest of the South American Andes. Amongst his most important ascents are Aconcagua’s South Face (Argentina), Alpamayo, Pirámide de Garcilazo, Huascaran, Esfinge (Peru), amongst others. As professional and certified mountain guide he leads international expeditions to all summits of Ecuador, also he was the personal guide of Ecuador’s president Rafael Correa. Furthermore he has a vast knowledge of Ecuador’s culture, history, flora & fauna whichis what makes him a great guide for your next adventure.

He is currently an ASEGUIM guide working toward his international IFMGA qualification. He counts with comprehensive experience in the Ecuadorian and the rest of the Andes. He became well known mountaineer after he found an airplane on Chimborazo which had disappeared since 1977. Furthermore he has a vast knowledge of Ecuador’s culture, history, flora & fauna which is what makes him a great guide for your next climbing adventure. Pablo Chiquiza is one of the best Ecuadorian mountain photographers, we are happy to share that we are using some of his best images in our Andeanface website.
Joshua Jarrín
Joshua Jarrín
Joshua started to climb at the age of ten as a member of the San Gabriel climbing club of Quito. His first expedition outside of the country was to Peru when he was sixteen. In the twenty years of mountaineering experience he has. He has summited peaks in Peru, Argentina, Bolivia, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Austria and Nepal. He is one of the few climbers who have done two ascents of the south face of Aconcagua (Argentina). As instructor, he is currently the director of the school of guides of ASEGUIM and also an international certified mountain guide (IFMGA). In November 2010 he led the first Ecuadorian ascent of Pumori in the Himalayas. He holds a B.A. in Culinary Art, so when he is not working as a guide, he enjoys spending time as a Chef. In March 2012 he summited mount Everest working as a guide for an north American expedition.

Freddy was the third Ecuadorian internationally certified mountain guide (IFMGA). He has completed his guide training at ENSA l’Ecole National de Ski et d’Alpinisme de France. Freddy was born at the foothills of Antisana volcano: As a child he started hiking and climbing around Antisana region. For many years he was the Director of the School of Mountain Guides in Ecuador, at the moment he works as one of the instructors. During his climbing career, Freddy has led many expeditions in Ecuador and also to other countries in the southern Andes like Peru, Bolivia and Argentina. Freddy has been climbing in Ecuador for more than 25 years.
Alejandro Lazzati
Alejandro Lazzati
Alejandro is a very talented mountaineer and rock climber. He has extensive climbing experience in all the mountains of Ecuador. He is an instructor of the Association of Guides ASEGUIM. In 2001 he led a successful expedition to the highest mountain of Peru and in 2008 he was the leader of an American expedition that succeeded on Aconcagua (the highest peak of the Americas). He holds a Wilderness Emergency Medical qualification as a technician given by WMI of NOLS (Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS) from the USA. He is the first Ecuadorian guide to become fully (IFMGA) certified. Alejandro has a deep feeling for nature and his passion for the mountains is truly joyful. His attention to detail, sensitivity to guest needs, and extensive knowledge of the mountains and history of the Andes of Ecuador is unrivalled.

With nearly 15 years of guiding experience. Jose has climbed almost every Ecuadorian mountain and the most significant ones in both Bolivian and Peruvian Andes. Jose is known for his enormous patience and positive energy. His personal feedback reflects professionalism, useful teaching techniques and cooperative skills in multicultural environments. Throughout Jose’s childhood and adolescence, he was involved in Scouting and Mountaineering Clubs, where he embraced principles of environmental conservation and his passion for mountain climbing. Overall, Jose is building his guiding career with the highest ethic and professional standards to ensure safety and enjoyment in every ascent. He is a internationally certified mountain guide ( IFMGA).

Oswaldo is a very experienced climber. He has made many notable climbs, among them the first traverse of all the summits of El Altar, two expeditions to the South Face of Aconcagua, the Eastern Face of Huayna Potosi in Bolivia and a difficult route up Peak Lenin. He has led many commercial expeditions to the Andes of Bolivia, Peru, Argentina and Mount Everest (the fourth time already in 2022) "Ossy" as we call him, is well informed about his country's culture, history, and spectacular natural places, and loves sharing his knowledge with our guests. His spirit, enthusiasm, and knowledge extend well beyond the borders of Ecuador. Besides guiding he is running Hacienda Rumiloma a unique restaurant and lodge overlooking the city of Quito. He is a internationally certified mountain guide (IFMGA).

Diego Zurita is a qualified ASEGUIM mountain guide who was part of the first group of Ecuadorian mountain guides who have been trained as instructors at the French National School of guides ENSA in 1996. He was one of the founders of the Ecuadorian School of Mountain Guides ESGUIM As a guide he has led expeditions to the southern Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Denali. Diego loves teaching mountaineering and glacier skills. He is a internationally certified mountain guide (IFMGA).

Robinson Solari he is a certified UIAGM/IFMGA guide and one of the instructors of the school of guides of ASEGUIM. He has been climbing for 20+ years. He is one of the leading instructors of El Saday a amateur mountaineering club from Quito where young kids learn rock climbing and mountaineering. During his adolescence he was an avid rock climber, he has won several rock climbing competitions doing speed climbing. At the moment Robin is a member of GRA (mountain rescue team from ASEGUIM). Besides mountaineering in Ecuador He has climbed and guide several 6.000m+ peaks in all the counties of the Andes.
Juliana García
Juliana García
She is one of the best women UIAGM certified guides from Ecuador that has a worldwide experience. She climbes the mountains of Ecuador since she was fifteen years old. Her experience has led her to guide many mountains and big walls throughout the Andes in Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, as well as in Pakistan, Alaska, United States and the Alps. She is the first female Ecuadorian certified IFMGA mountain guide and was the President of the Association of guides for 6 years. Her many occupations include beeing instructor in the Ecuadorian guiding school ESGUIM, beeing a Patagonia Brand Ambassador and an AIARE Avalanche Education Instructor. Her climbing achievements include a first ascent of Huandoy East north face in the Peruvian Andes rated at TD + V + M3/4. Together with her climbing partner Joshua Jarrín, they were recognized for this complex ascent in the 2012 list of climbs chosen by the organization “Piolet d’or”. Recently, she and Anna Pfaff did another first ascent in Bolivia named ¨La ruta del Solsticio¨ located on the northeast face of Tiquimani, rated 5.10b R. in the summer of 2016.

Cristian Rivera is a certified ASEGUIM mountain guide with a few hundreds of ascents of the main peaks from Ecuador.

Born in the heart of the Andes in the second highest capital city in the world, Quito, I started my mountaineer career as young as 13 years old. At 17 I knew I would become a mountain guide. I have been climbing mountains and exploring new routes since I was 17. After climbing Ecuador´s highest peaks, I moved to Peru, to the amazing Cordillera Blanca area. There I climbed peaks with some of the most impressive views in the world. While traveling around South America, I have climbed and hiked in amazing places: Huaraz, Arequipa, Cuzco, Vilcanota, Huyahuash, Atacama, Copiapó Tandil, La Paz, Potosí, Uyuni and others. Life has become a continuous trip of exploring and sharing these amazing places with people who care about nature, human groups and increasing life experiences. Camilo Andrade is a certified ASEGUIM mountain guide and now candidate to obtain his UIAGM/IFMGA certificaton, also a Ecotourism graduate from the Catholic University in Quito.

David has been climbing since he was 16 years old. His passion for mountaneering grew and has taken him to lead expeditions in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. He is a member of the Ecuadorian Association of Mountain Guides (ASEGUIM) and the International Association of Mountain Guides Associations (UIAGM). David has guided climbs from the most basic rock climbing and mountaineering objectives, to difficult big walls. His passion for climbing and helping people reach their climbing goals is evident in his guiding. He is an extremely hardworking, positive, and patient guide. He considers his work is the bridge between people's dreams and reality. When he is not climbing, you can find him working as a freelance teacher at the University of Quito.

Fatima Serrano has been going to the mountains since she was 11 years old and since then it has become for her the playground of her career. “A couple of years ago I decided to go on the professional side of mountaineering, and began the training to become a professional mountain guide. Now, I'm an aspirant UIAGM/IFMGA guide. This process has taken me to beautiful mountains, crazy climbing places and amazing countries, such as, Bolivia, Perú, Colombia, México, and the Alps. I'm looking forward to finishing the UIAGM/IFMGA process and to keep on discovering new places and learning more and more”. Her father Dr Marcos Serrano was one of the pioneers in mountaineering in Ecuador, a well-respected climber, for many years and active member of the San Gabriel Mountaineering Club.
